Cave Archaeology Group

Kinsey Cave is situated on High Scar, above Giggleswick Scar, to the north-west of Settle in North Yorkshire. The revised Scheduled Monument record of 1992 cites excavations between 1925 and 1932 which revealed Bronze Age and Roman material as well as "stratified material of Upper Palaeolithic type". Earlier 20th Century digs, plus other activity as far back as the 1880's produced animal and bear bone. Site visits and assessments in the new millennium by the University of Bradford revealed badger nesting and digging in the cave together with the appearance of human bone in one area. This archaeologically significant site was seen to be at risk from damage by badgers and metal detectorists and an excavation took place in 2005 to rescue and record any existing remains which were thought to be at risk.
